CONCLUSION

Your final net monthly income is 0,000 VND.
You will not have any money to cover any of other expenses that were not included in this very simplified simulation

None of your children are in school anymore.
Without qualifications, they may have to find labour work to help the family. Without a school network, they may not have opportunities to interact with their peers or have a consistent mentor figure in their lives which may result in mental health challenges. Furthermore, the pathways available to these children are more limited now that they do not have formal educational training - they may have to continue in the vicious poverty cycle

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

Now that you have finished the simulation, discuss these questions by yourself, with a partner, group or as a class. Has your perspective changed? Did you learn anything new?

  1. Given these spendings, do you think you can sustain this way of life such that all of your children can complete high school education?

  2. How do you think the interruption in these children’s schooling due to the COVID-19 pandemic will affect their overall education?

  3. What were some difficult choices you had to debate between when deciding your family’s finances?

  4. What other factors can you think of that may prevent children’s continued access to education?

  5. In order to sustain your family’s expenses, how many children had to stop attending school?

CLOSING REMARKS

This simplified simulation encompasses a situation in which an impoverished family in a rural location attempts to seek education for their children while maintaining basic living standards. Although this simulation is fictional, these circumstances are not uncommon in low-income areas. As illustrated in the scenarios, it is difficult to maintain a concrete budget to send all the children to school due to unexpected circumstances in everyday life such as medical emergencies and work limitations. Therefore, the overarching goal of this simulation was to place emphasis on potential barriers in achieving further education. Obstacles to education are more complex than having an adequate salary. Aside from having sufficient funds, it is also important to have adequate resources–such as in the COVID scenario–to supplement the quality of education. Overall, there are various factors that can inhibit a child from accessing education.
